about
John J Griffin (Dad) passed away last Thursday 11/29. About 10 years ago I wrote this song called Randall. And I knew some day I’d have to share it like this. It’s mostly based on his life with some slight tweaks. Please for him, I hope you’ll indulge me.
lyrics
Randall’s folks met on the boat.
As they reached the shores from Ireland.
But they never told him, where they came from.
Randall was just four when he last saw his mother
Went to give birth to a brother but they never came back.
(His) Pop he stood up, did what he could do.
Leather and pay checks, straight’s how they grew. Straight’s how they grew.
Randall was kept back at school.
But he figured it out,
Gave them the Golden Rule,
Then he got out and he went down.
Signed himself up. Fight for the cause
Whatever it was.
And “Over there” and “Over there. Send the word, send the word, over there. The Yanks, they’re coming.”
Went in a man, came out a boy.
But he never spoke of
What he’d seen or done,
He just moved on.
Took thirty years to meet.
The girl that grew up right down the street.
They fell in love.
Thirty year mortgage, three little kids.
House he could paint, cars he could fix.
Cars he could fix.
White collar smart oh. Blue collar wise.
White collar smart oh. Blue collar wise.
That’s the way to frame
That’s the way to frame
That’s the way to frame your life.
Randall’s folks met on the boat.
Or so I’m told.
But that’s all I know. Nothing more.
